Today in our prayers we are targeting addictions. Jesus came to set us free, but many people are struggling with addictions of one sort or another, including many Christians. It could a substance addiction to drugs or alcohol; it could be a behavioural addiction to spending which leads you into living beyond your means and into debt; or it could be an addiction to gambling or to excessive food consumption. It could manifest as an eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia, or it might come from a low sense of self-worth and show up as an addiction to self-harm. It could be a compulsive addiction to pornography, or to video games, the internet or social media. The list is long, and in our day it seems to be growing.
Perhaps you know someone who is struggling with one of these issues. Perhaps you are struggling yourself with something that you know is out of order in your life. Jesus comes to set us free. He said “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:44). He said “I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) He said “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me … he has sent me to proclaim freedom for prisoners … to set the oppressed free” (Luke 4:18). Jesus is able to break every yoke and every bondage!
Lord Jesus, you came to give us power over the enemy and over everything that would try to gain power over us. We declare your Lordship over ourselves and over every person who we bring before you in prayer today. We declare that you are greater than every addiction, you are the victor over every struggle and you come to set us free from everything that holds us captive. Let the power of your Holy Spirit come and break the chains over our lives so that we can experience the truth that “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!”
Amen God break every chain only you can set captives free and they are free indeed.
Amen! Then everyone will dance like the chains have been broken!
