The shortest verse in the bible actually tells us so much. John 11.35 ’Jesus wept’ - This tells us so much about Jesus. He had incredible compassion and the scripture says He was constantly ‘touched’ by feeling our infirmities, Heb 4:15. On this occasion ( in John 11.35 ) we see Jesus weeping. The bible does not explain ’why’ He was weeping. Was it for His friend Lazarus ? was it for Mary and Martha who had just lost their brother ? or was it, as many believe, because of their lack of trust and belief ? In any event, this scripture reveals Christ’s compassion for us in those moments of sadness and sorrow.
Let’s pray today for all those we know, battling with sickness and sorrow. Father comfort them in their moment of despair, doubt and discourgement.
Let us realise that compassion is at the heart of all that is merciful and gracious. In an ever increasing cynical world, compassion prevents that cynicism, which leads to a heart that is hard and cold to both man and God. Lord impray you will give us hearts of compassion that we might represent you faithfully and powerfully wherever we find ourselves.
